DESCRIPTION:REGISTER \nHosted by DRAR’s Legislative Committee. Guest speakers: Tiffany Elder & Aaron Lubeck \nIt’s no secret Durham needs new housing. Residents continue to be priced out of the city\, and the variety of housing options is limited. A new text amendment to the Durham code proposes unlock opportunities for more new housing to be built. The main goals of the text amendment are to: \n\nCreate an ambitious path for the building of affordable housing without public subsidy.\nFix outdated parking regulations in Durham.\nAllow for neighborhood commercial districts\, which create more opportunities for small businesses.\nClean up some of the unintended hurdles that local practitioners have identified as preventing better housing.\n\nLearn how these changes can help your business\, and provide better housing opportunities in Durham. \n \nTiffany is a Durham-based Realtor\, licensed general contractor\, and real estate developer. She owns Paradigm Properties (real estate brokerage firm) and Paradigm Construction (HUB-certified residential and commercial construction firm). \nTiffany understands first-hand the challenges of creating inclusive spaces and affordable housing opportunities in Durham. She developed North Carolina’s first “triple benefit” residential project that was green-certified\, received historic preservation tax credits\, and was priced affordably for buyers below 80%AMI. \nTiffany Co-Chairs the Durham Affordable Housing Implementation Committee\, which oversees Durham’s 95MM Affordable Housing Bond. She is a sponsor of the SCAD UDO Text Amendment (Simplifying Codes for More Affordable Development)\, and believes in its ability to create better housing opportunities\, and to re-establish a for-sale affordable home market in Durham. \n \nAaron is a designer\, builder + developer. He is the author of Green Restorations: Sustainable Building and Historic Homes\, and an adjunct professor at Duke University’s Nicholas School\, where he lectured on sustainable home building. In 2012\, Aaron developed Durham’s first net-zero-energy home\, an infill project designed to fit seamlessly in its historic neighborhood. \nAaron’s more recent work focuses on city reforms to facilitate reconstruction of affordable housing markets\, including local efforts to create Missing Middle codes. He recently served as faculty with Incremental Development Alliance in West Atlanta training fledgling developers\, and is host of The Townbuilder’s Podcast\, a curated conversation with top new urbanist developers. He lives in Durham\, North Carolina.
